Spotlight on one specific tree at Oakwell: a white oak (Quercus alba, or in the Lenape language, wipunkòkw) that towers over the historically significant greenhouse complex designed before 1903 by noted architect Frank Miles Day and shades the centerpiece of Stoneleigh’s WWI-era gardening and horticultural training program for young women (Oakwell was carved out of Stoneleigh between 1919-1922). In the above photo, a 1903 view of the then 130-year-old white oak outside the greenhouse complex (B&W photo to the left) To the right, is the current view of the same oak tree, now 250-years-old outside the greenhouse complex.
