SCHOOL BOARD VOTES TO SELL OAKWEL

The Lower Merion Board of School Directors authorizes the sale of its property at 1835 County Line Road, Lower Merion Township, Montgomery County Pennsylvania, 19085.


The Buyers will be Natural Lands Trust, Inc., dba Natural Lands, which will use approximately seven (7) acres of the 1835 property in conjunction with the adjacent Stoneleigh property, and an additional non-profit entity to be identified later, which will use less than three (3) acres of the 1835 Property for a use complementary to the adjacent Stoneleigh property.

The total purchase prices to be paid for the 1800 property, and the 1835 property, will not exceed $12,915,000. The agreement may include deferred closing based on buyer funding sources, land development, approval, and budgetary considerations.

The above picture is what 13.4 acres of Oakwell looks like today-home to 700 mature trees, some over 100 years old. Home to hundreds of species of birds and other animals, and is the site of numerous historical structures.

  If the Lower Merion School District proceeded with its plans, all of those trees, animals, and structures would have disappeared in favor of auxiliary athletic fields to be used by the students at Black Rock Middle School. Thank you for helping us save and preserve Oakwell.

OAKWELL: HOW DID WE GET HERE?

Lower Merion School District touts their excellence in education and cooperation with the community, But actions speak louder than words. A hasty decision made years ago threatened to destroy hundreds of trees and a historic estate.  Thanks to overwhelming public support to save the property, the school district finally decided it was best to deviate from its costly, ill-concieved pla is growing, the school district stubbornly continues to forge ahead with their costly, ill-conceived plan
